A Traveler’s Guide to Peyto Lake: 7 Things You Need To Know

Planning a trip to Peyto Lake? We can help you get ready, with our list of things to know for anyone visiting the location. From the best time to visit to the top activities in the area, we’ll give you the complete rundown!

Where is Peyto Lake located?

Peyto Lake is located in Banff National Park, Canada. The lake can be accessed off the Icefields Parkway (also known as 93N), which begins just off the Trans-Canada Highway #1, a few minutes West of Lake Louise.

From there, it’s a scenic 40-kilometer drive to the Bow Summit and Peyto Lake Lookout parking lot.

As you drive along the Icefields Parkway, keep an eye out for signs that will lead you to the turnoff for Peyto Lake. If you’re driving from the Trans-Canada Highway, the turnoff will be on your left. And if you’re driving from Jasper, it will be on your right.

Once you arrive at the parking lot, head to the far end to start your walk to the viewpoint. You’ll find an information sign and washroom facilities there as well.

The hike up to the Peyto Lake Lookout takes around 10 minutes uphill, but don’t worry, the stunning view of the lake will make the trek worth it!

Pro-tip:

Have elderly or disabled visitors with you? There’s an upper parking lot that follows the signs for buses and handicapped parking. You can also drop off visitors at a designated point to eliminate the walk!

When is the best time to visit Peyto Lake?

The best time to visit Peyto Lake is typically from June to September, which is peak season. However, springtime around May or June is also a fantastic time to visit the lake if you want the best views.

The lake melts during May and wildflowers start to bloom, creating a picturesque landscape that’s hard to resist. Spring also means the trails around the lake are not too crowded.

In the summer months, the lake is usually full and the weather warm and sunny. It’s an excellent time to enjoy water activities such as kayaking, canoeing, and swimming

What about fall, which is from September to October? It can be a good time to visit if you really want to avoid crowds, but note that there aren’t a lot of fall colors here (Peyto Lake doesn’t have a lot of larch trees).

Winter is typically in late October. It’s still worth a look then because the snow makes the lake very photogenic.

What features make Peyto Lake unique?

The main feature that makes Peyto Lake unique is its color, which is a breathtaking blue. The color is so vivid, in fact, that it has led to the lake becoming one of the most-photographed and iconic lakes in the entire world!

But that’s not all that makes Peyto Lake special. The lake is also situated in one of the most picturesque settings you’ll ever come across, surrounded by stunning mountain peaks, dense forests, and the impressive Wapta Icefield.

Peyto Lake is also unique in that it is named after a famous early Canadian mountain guide and trapper, Bill Peyto. He was known for his extensive knowledge of the area and is said to have been one of the first non-indigenous people to explore the lake and its surroundings.

Another remarkable aspect of Peyto Lake that should not be overlooked is its distinctive shape.

When seen from a bird’s eye view, the lake’s two connected lobes form the shape of a wolf’s head!

Why does Peyto Lake have its blue color?

Peyto Lake owes its vivid blue color to the rock flour deposited in the lake by the glacier nearby. This happens during the summer months and it creates a striking color that attracts many onlookers.

If you’re wondering exactly how the rock flour creates the colour, it’s because particles are so fine that they remain suspended in the water instead of sinking straight down. They then refract the sunlight, creating the lake’s striking color.

The color of Peyto Lake changes throughout the year, ranging from deep turquoise in the summer to a vivid blue in the fall. The different levels of sunlight and temperature also play a role in the lake’s color variation.

So, whether you visit Peyto Lake in the summer or fall, you’ll be sure to witness its stunning and ever-changing shades of blue.

Want to get the best shot of the waters? The viewing platform overlooking the lake is the ideal spot for that!

What wildlife can you expect in Peyto Lake?

In Peyto Lake, you can expect various kinds of wildlife, including grizzly bears, chipmunks, and hoary marmots. Due to the grizzlies, you need to pack some safety items to ensure your security.

Bring some bear spray if you’re planning on hiking around the area, as grizzlies really are common here. The other two animals we mentioned are less dangerous.

That said, the chipmunks at Peyto Lake are a little too brave for their own good. Thanks to tourists feeding them in the past, they’ve gotten used to human interaction.

However, it’s important not to feed them (it’s illegal!) and to keep your distance. These cute little guys may seem friendly, but they can bite if provoked.

On the other hand, hoary marmots are a bit more timid. You’ll often find them sunbathing on the rocks, letting out loud whistles that sound almost human-like.

They’re not as likely to approach you as the chipmunks, but it’s still important to respect their space and not disturb them.
