Calgary Winter Club is a recreation centre in North Haven, south of Nose Hill Park. They were founded in 1959 by Roy Farran through the funding he received from the first 1,200 club members.

Honestly, this recreation centre is the most impressive I’ve seen in Alberta. They boast a vast array of facilities, including swimming pools, bowling alleys, badminton courts, and tennis courts.

When it comes to tennis programs, they offer two options: for youth and adults.

They also have an elite program designed to help young players compete in provincial tournaments and attain scholarships from top schools in the US and Canada.

I also love that they turn tennis into a fitness activity through special programs like their cardio tennis program. You can sign up for these programs by becoming a member and downloading their app on the App Store or the Play Store.

Pros

  • Has an elite program for those looking to play tennis competitively
  • Offers special tennis programs, like cardio tennis, that are designed to help with your fitness goals
  • Has a mobile app that lets you reserve tennis courts easily

Cons

  • Above-average prices
  • Some snobbish staff

Aforza Tennis, formerly known as The Tennis Academy, is one of the oldest tennis clubs in Calgary. Founded in 1974 by Karen and Jeff Spiers, they offer programs and facilities for tennis and pádel (a mix of tennis and squash) players in the city.

Currently, they have tennis programs that cater to young and adult tennis players. They also have an academy designed to provide competitive training for those aspiring to become professional tennis players.

These training programs are some of the best in the city, as they’re conducted by a team of highly experienced coaches led by Jeff himself, an Alberta Tennis Hall of Fame inductee.

They also have an equipment store where members can purchase various items, including recycled tennis balls sold for $25 per 100 balls. I view this as a huge positive, as it helps reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills.

Pros

  • Has a training academy for those looking to become professional tennis players
  • Highly experienced coaching team led by co-owner Jeff Spiers, an Alberta Tennis Hall of Fame inductee
  • Sells recycled tennis balls for cheap prices

Cons

  • Sometimes forgets to respond to calls and emails
  • Requires new members to commit to a full-year membership without cancellation

Osten & Victor Alberta Tennis Centre is a Team Canada national training centre in Acadia that was founded in 2016. Currently led by Danny Da Costa, they provide tennis programs to youth and adults.

These programs welcome players of various skill levels from anywhere between 1.0 and 4.5. What really impresses me though is that they have inclusive tennis training programs that specifically cater to indigenous groups and women, like their She Can Play Girls Camp.

As for their facilities, they have 13 indoor tennis courts and an 850-square-foot fitness centre that are open to members and visitors.

The most amazing facilities they have are their two Playsight technology courts, which are equipped with 6 3D visual processing cameras that provide accurate performance analysis and instant replay.

Mount Pleasant Tennis Club, located in Rotary Park, is a tennis club with a heartwarming history. The club survived and improved throughout the decades through the assistance and volunteer work provided by the local community and club members.

Today, they have five tennis courts that are paved with asphalt-based Plexipave, which is quite nice, as it’s more resilient and durable compared to standard shale courts.

Moreover, they offer group lessons and private and semi-private lessons for those interested in taking personalised coaching sessions.

You can sign up for a club membership for an annual fee of $200 for adults, $50 for children, and $125 for seniors and students.

The best thing about them is that they offer free group tennis lessons on specific dates. Visit their Facebook page to learn when!

  • Below-average membership fees
  • Tennis courts are paved with Plexipave
  • Free group tennis lessons

Cons

  • Has received some complaints about the court lighting being too strong for players to play properly at night
